Many prestigious companies have policies, which mandate the wearing of protective eyewear on a gate to gate basis. Most of these employers recognize the importance of including side protection combined with frontal protection to further reduce eye injurys.
The Aye-Mate® and Wing-Mate™ Universal Sideshield provides an inexpensive method for retrofitting safety glasses now in service. A mandatory permanent attached sideshield policy would reverse gains to the acceptance made by providing workers with fashionable safety eyewear.
OSHA agrees that side protection need not be permanent and that detachable sideshields should be permitted as long as they meet the criteria of the final rule. Permitting detachable sideshields will provide employers flexibility to use this kind of protection when necessary, based on hazard conditions at the work place.
